Atlanta's ‘BEST WORLD MUSIC ACT’ Salutes Men on Father's Day

Atlanta's ‘BEST WORLD MUSIC ACT’ Salutes Men on Father's Day

ATLANTA -- You have seen them on NBC television network reality series “America’s Got Talent” and if you are a reality-show junkie, you remember them sharing  their high-energy dance experience with singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss and Attorney Phaedra Parks in connection with their travels to South Africa on BRAVO cable network top-rated reality series “Real Housewives of Atlanta”.

Now, the 19-year Atlanta-based ensemble GIWAYEN MATA, is going  to bring their ‘contagious’ high energy drum and dance to the Southwest Arts Center for Father's Day. Between educating audiences about African traditions and breaking barriers as an all-sistah ensemble in a male dominated percussion industry, its no wonder Creative Loafing Magazine named them "Best Local World Music Act" three times!

Atlanta renames month of May: “31 Days of Jazz”

“The 2012 Atlanta Jazz Festival will officially begin on May 1st,” states Camille Russell Love, Director of the Office of Cultural Affairs.  “For the entire month of May we are partnering with parks, restaurants, clubs and venues around Atlanta to host jazz related events.  We are renaming May this year and we’ll call it ‘31 Days of Jazz!’ We’ve got something for everyone...from the soulful sounds of the Mose Davis Trio at Sun Dial, to spicy Latin jazz at Fiesta Atlanta in Centennial Park, to legendary pianist Johnny O’Neal at the Loews Atlanta Hotel.  We hope that people will get out and explore some new hot spots and eateries around the city, and truly get into the community spirit of the festival.”

ATLANTA --  (submitted by Terri Vismale-Morris)  AFFRM, the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement, will open its third film, RESTLESS CITY, in Atlanta this Friday, April 27 at AMC Phipps Plaza.

Filmmaker Andrew Dosunmu's stunning feature directorial debut was an Official Selection at 2011 Sundance Film Festival in the NEXT category, and tells the story of an African immigrant surviving on the fringes of New York City where music is his passion, life is a hustle, and falling in love is his greatest risk.

Variety explained, "The extraordinarily beautiful "Restless City" achieves revelation on two tiers -- in the kinetic landscape of the city itself and in the world of Senegalese immigrants, whose struggle evolves just beneath the sightlines of the average New Yorker. Visually, it's euphoric."  While The Hollywood Reporter called the film, "a stunning, intense twist on the American Dream."
