Opening reception for Spelman Museum 'Multiple Choice' Feb. 7

ATLANTA -- Stepping into the archives housing the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art permanent collection is akin to diving into a treasure trove of mixed media. Paintings, textiles, prints and sculptures by Faith Ringgold, iona rozeal brown, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, and Hale Woodruff are among the 350 pieces in the collection. The museum has opened the doors of its collection storage to friends and champions of the institution, who have in turn, helped to create the upcoming exhibition, “Multiple Choice: Perspectives on the Spelman College Collection.”

Documentary on tobacco addiction comes to Fulton County

ATLANTA -- Tobacco use is responsible for 87% of lung cancer deaths, most cases of chronic obstructive disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, 21% of all coronary heart diseases and kills more than 400,000 Americans each year, with about 700 of those deaths occurring in Fulton County.

FULTON COUNTY -- To celebrate the holiday season, the South Fulton Arts Center will host a wreath exhibit at the center in College Park on December 1.

They are now looking for artists and crafters to make artistic versions of holiday wreaths, using various materials to be shown and sold at South Fulton Arts Center's Holiday Arts and Crafts Market.

Acclaimed organist launches Spelman College Annual Recital Series Nov. 14

ATLANTA  – Distinguished organist Nathaniel Gumbs, interim associate director of music and arts at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C, will launch the 2012-2013 Spelman College Harreld-James Organ Recital Series, Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Gumbs’ program will include organ favorites and “A Spiritual Suite” by African-American composer Calvin Taylor. The recital series is presented by the Spelman College Office of the President and the department of music.

The recital is free and open to the public.
