Al Jarreau to hold jazz class at Mays HS

ATLANTA -- Jazz legend Al Jarreau will bring his decades of knowledge to a master class at a southwest Atlanta high school.

Jarreau, in conjunction with Jazz 91.9 WCLK and the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Foundation's ArtsBridge program, will host the jazz class at Benjamin E. Mays High School on Thursday, Sept. 20.

The visit is part of the Jazz in the Classroom initiative, which aims to create a dialogue about jazz, music lessons and the radio industry. Its goal is to curb the dropout rate and emphasize the significance of arts and music education.

Jarreau will be at Mays High from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Black rubber fragments from recycled tires have been painstakingly twisted, knotted and folded to create the complex and expressive abstract sculpture “Mixed Messages,” by artist Chakaia Booker. “Mixed Messages” is one of 32 pieces included in “Material Girls: Contemporary Black Women Artists,” an exhibition presented by Spelman College Museum of Fine Art. The exhibition, on view through Dec. 1, 2012, explores the innovative ways that Black women artists fuse fine art and craft.

Booker and the six other artists featured in the exhibition have created three-dimensional works that exemplify the value of organic and man-made materials. Incorporating a range of materials including hair, beads, tissue paper, volcanic stone, rubber tires, and plastic, the artists are keenly attentive to the pleasures derived from the sense of touch.
