Toni Cade Bambara Conference addresses black feminism

ATLANTA -- The13th Annual Toni Cade Bambara Scholar-Activism Conference, “Shattering Silences, Speaking Resistance, and Seeking Sites of Liberation,” convenes March 22-23, 2013, at Spelman College to explore issues impacting women nationally and globally such as gender violence, misogyny in the music industry, mental health and its correlation to Black feminism, and sex trafficking. Conference presentations, panels and workshops will equip attendees, particularly the Millennial Generation, with strategies and methods to effect positive social change around these issues. Hosted by the Spelman College Women’s Research and Resource Center in the Cosby Academic Center, the conference is free and open to the public.

Gotta have art! Spelman Museum hosts Community Day

ATLANTA -- The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art's Community Day will be held Saturday, March 9, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

During Community Day festivities, families can enjoy guided tours of the exhibition, “Multiple Choice: Perspectives on the Spelman College;” take part in art-making workshops, try their luck at an art scavenger hunt, and participate in interactive dance performances.

The first 25 families to arrive at the museum will receive a free gift. The event is free and open to the public.

Opening reception for Spelman Museum 'Multiple Choice' Feb. 7

ATLANTA -- Stepping into the archives housing the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art permanent collection is akin to diving into a treasure trove of mixed media. Paintings, textiles, prints and sculptures by Faith Ringgold, iona rozeal brown, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, and Hale Woodruff are among the 350 pieces in the collection. The museum has opened the doors of its collection storage to friends and champions of the institution, who have in turn, helped to create the upcoming exhibition, “Multiple Choice: Perspectives on the Spelman College Collection.”
