African art expert Rowland Abiodun to discuss new book at Spelman College

ATLANTA -- Professor Rowland Abiodun, the Johnson C. Newton Professor of Art, the History of Art, and Black Studies at Amherst College, will visit Spelman College, Thursday, Oct 2, at 4 p.m. to discuss his new book, Yoruba Art and Language: Seeking the African in African Art.

In his latest book, Abiodun, a highly esteemed professor and expert on African art and Yoruba culture, makes plain the connection between the art and language of the Yoruba people.

Spelman College Museum of Fine Art hosts Community Day

ATLANTA -- The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, in partnership with the Spelman College Department of Dance and Drama will host their annual Community Day, an interactive experience of the Brides of Anansi: Fiber and Contemporary Art exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Brides of Anansi reveals how the exhibition’s featured artists use and manipulate fiber to articulate their perspectives on identity, relationships, history, experiences and artistry. The artists spin, weave, twist, and loop fibers through the ancient lens of Anansi, the Ghanaian folk hero and spider-man who is the central character in countless West African and Caribbean fables, to create an array of colorful and commanding works.

ATLANTA -- This year, the Atlanta Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College (NAASC) is celebrating 100 years of service to alumnae and the community with a Centennial Scholarship Brunch on October 11, hosted by “House of Payne” actress Cassi Davis (Class of 2009) and “For Better or Worse” actor Brad James.

This year’s brunch theme is “Painting the Town Blue: 100 Years of Spelman Legacy.” The goals of the Centennial Celebrations and Endowed Scholarship Campaign are to highlight achievements of Spelman alumnae and the local chapter and establish a $100,000 endowed scholarship for the college’s Metro Atlanta students.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- On Sept. 23, Americans will celebrate National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) with a massive 50-state effort to register voters before Election Day this November. Fulton County Registration and Elections encourages residents to join others across the nation who will be registering to vote.

The deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 4 General Election is Monday, Oct. 6. Online voter registration is available, which allows new voters to complete the entire process online at www.fultonelections.com. In Fulton County, residents can register to vote online, at their city hall, the Georgia Department of Driver Services, any Atlanta Fulton County Library Branch, at one of the three registration and elections offices or by mail.

PROBE College Fair coming to Atlanta

PROBE College Fair coming to Atlanta

ATLANTA -- The popular PROBE College Fair will stop in Atlanta next week, giving high school students an opportunity to speak directly to representatives from their favorite colleges and universities.

The fair will be Friday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Atlanta Metropolitan State College. It is only open to students in Atlanta Public Schools.

A number of schools in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and the Carolinas, will be represented. See a complete list of participating colleges.

Workforce Investment Act Board Task Force to meet Tuesday

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fulton County Workforce Preparation and Employment System – Workforce Investment Act Board (FCWPES-WIA) Board Development, Visibility and Influence Committee Task Force will meet on Tuesday September 9, 2014 at 11:30 a.m.

It will be held at the Adamsville Regional Health Center on the second floor.  The Adamsville Regional Health Center is located at 3700 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta.

The FCWPES-WIA Board oversees activities related to providing an environment that supports a skilled and trained workforce and creating innovative programs that serve the changing needs of employers and the business community.

WIA helps Georgia move toward a comprehensive, customer-focused workforce investment system where Job Seeker and Employer customers alike can access a wide range of workforce-related tools and information needed to manage their work activities. Services are provided through a network of One-Stop Centers statewide.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Voter Education is an essential non-partisan comprehensive approach to providing the citizens of Fulton County with vital information and data to enhance the voter experience.

The Department of Registration and Elections regularly partners with civic, business and religious organizations to conduct voter registration drives. Groups interested in scheduling a drive can contact the Department of Registration and Elections by phone 404-612-7020 or by fax 404-730-7024.
