Atlanta Housing Authority CEO to step down

Atlanta Housing Authority CEO to step down

ATLANTA -- Renee Lewis Glover, CEO of the Atlanta Housing Authority, will leave the organization after 17 years at the helm.

According to a statement from the AHA, "the new board members appointed by Mayor Kasim Reed have made it clear that they would like to have change in leadership at the AHA, which is fully within the prerogative of the mayor and the board."

Glover and members of the board have been working "cooperatively' to come up with "mutually acceptable terms of separation and an orderly transition," the statement said.

Since Reed became Atlanta's mayor in January 2010, he began appointing board members who regularly challenged Glover's leadership and her policies in running the organization.

Before Reed was elected in November 2009, the AHA board had signed a five-year contract with Glover.

Don’t Pass Up Neighborhood Stabilization Program Properties

Don’t Pass Up Neighborhood Stabilization Program Properties

Personally having the opportunity to walk inside several upgraded and renovated Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) homes in the City of Atlanta, one thing is clear to me.  The properties are phenomenal.  Everything inside is new (if it’s not, it certainly is in great condition).  Fresh paint.  Stainless steel appliances. Hardwood floors (in some units) or new carpets.  Fenced-in back yards and/or covered front porches.  These are just a few of the upgrades attracting buyers to the City.  But renters have a great selection of upgraded units too.  Some have granite counters and other amenities I just mentioned.  NSP properties are a great choice for singles, families and college grads who want to live in the City.  If you are in the market to buy and you want to live in the City, I would not pass up the opportunities NSP offers you.

Tavis Smiley & Cornel West stop for their "Poverty Tour" & visit Atlanta’s Urban Organic Farm

Old 4th Ward --  Talk show host Tavis Smiley and professor/author Cornel West will be in Atlanta on August 11 as part of a 15-city "Poverty Tour" to bring attention to the issues facing poor people in the United States. They will visit Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture (TLW) in Atlanta’s old Fourth Ward as part of their tour because of the organization’s unique urban development plan.

Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture represents a new and innovative way to get fresh food to inner city residents while creating jobs and educational tools. Founded by former U.S. Agriculture Department Under Secretary Rashid Nuri, TLW has four sites in the inner city of Atlanta each growing organic vegetable and fruits. Along with the 100% organic food production, TLW. works to engage the community in gaining a better understanding of food and its role in better health and community development.

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Atlanta, GA --  The blog Running With Tweezers has a great article including a variety of great recipes for this year's peaches.  If you have had one of this year's peaches you know they are just delicious!!!  Whether you want to make ice cream, a cake or a cobbler, @RunningWithTweezers.com has the perfect recipe for you.

Around here, we’re really fortunate to have summers full of local peaches. Growing up, they were one of my dad’s favorite foods and they made appearances at our house fairly regularly. Sliced on pound cake or angel food cake, on top of cottage cheese the old school way. In the colder months, he’d even eat canned peaches straight up with a spoon. While I’m not a proponent of the tinned variety, I’m a huge fan of the fresh ones grown here in the South.
