MLK bridge open after downtown fire

ATLANTA -- Martin Luther King Jr. Drive has opened between Centenntial Olympic Park Drive and Northside Drive after possible structural damage to the MLK bridge.

Fire officials believe it may have been damaged by a fire at a homeless encampment at Magnum and Mitchell streets, just before Tuesday's afternoon rush hour.

About 30 people were living in the encampment. They were all evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Georgia DOT inspectors and Atlanta Public Works officials were checking the bridge's integrity Wednesday morning.

The MLK bridge runs over railroad tracks and connects Castleberry Hill to Downtown Atlanta near the Georgia Dome.

Even though the fire occured on Mitchell Street, the new $8.8 million Mitchell Street bridge was not damaged by the fire.
